Because why do I need to change something that is already perfect?! 😛
As I sit by my desk window, trying to take in every bit of the winter sun, I write this absolute love letter from me to everyone who needs this (including myself).
I don’t want to sound dramatic so let’s cut to the chase, 2021 hasn’t been easy on us and 2022 as they say is only going to be the second version of 2020, so is it even important to make grand New Year’s resolutions?! Absolutely not! I’ve never believed in New Year’s resolutions and I think it is a marketing gimmick to sell all the journals/diaries etc. My problem with such resolutions (and majority of skincare products) is, they try to fix you. Something needs fixing only when it is broken, but why do we consider ourselves broken?
So I thought of creating a list of promises that I’d like to make to the person I love the most (hello selfie!). Promises that aren’t resolutions and I can forgive myself if I don’t “achieve” them because I am not a sales target.
Here are a few things I’ve loved and collected from the internet and I am definitely going to give them a shot in order to “enhance my living experience”- sounds like a beauty advertisement trying to sell me a shady product.
In all seriousness, presenting to you the Rules for Living as penned by one of my favourite authors Helen Fielding in the book Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination and edited to suit my needs by none other than Sal (me! Why are you even reading this blog post if you don’t know Sal?) :
- Never panic. Stop, breathe, think. Unless you’re being chased by a wild buffalo.
- No one is thinking about you. They’re thinking about themselves, just like you. So be wild and a little less narcissistic.
- Never change haircut or colour before an important event. Otherwise be ready to cry over your chopped out strands lying on the floor.
- Nothing is either as bad or as good as it seems. Unless it is Mr Darcy (you decide whether he was good or bad).
- Do as you would be done by e.g., thou shalt not kill 😛
- It is better to buy one expensive thing that you really like than several cheap ones that you only quite like. #SlowFashion rocks!
- Hardly anything matters: if you get upset ask yourself “Does it really matter?”. If the answer is yes then chase it like the wild buffalo which was chasing you!
- The key to success lies in how you pick yourself up from failure. Remember your knight in shining armour might just get delayed because he stopped for a drink on the way so all you’ve got is yourself now.
- Be honest and kind. Although leave some space for white lies because they might save some lives.
- Only buy clothes that make you feel like doing a small dance. Pyjamas are totally okay.
- Trust your instincts, not your overactive imagination. Unless it is Chris Hemsworth.
- When overwhelmed by disaster (and your decisions), check if it’s really a disaster by doing the following: a) think, “Oh, f*ck it”, b) look on the bright side (or your bright pink tee) and if that doesn’t work, look on the funny side (yes, right where your partner is sleeping :P)
- If neither of the above works then maybe it is a disaster so turn to items 1 and 4 or turnover and sleep.
- Don’t expect the world to be safe or life to be fair. In the real world two plus two won’t add up to four every time some fools will make it twenty two or 2022!
- Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, but don’t forget to always Glow with the flow.
- Don’t regret anything. Remember there wasn’t anything else that could have happened, given who you were and the state of the world at that moment. The only thing you can change is the present, so learn from the past and mask up always!
- If you start regretting something and think “I should have done……” always add “but then I might have been run over by a lorry or blown up by a Japanese-manned torpedo or even lost my sense of taste to covid”.
I am definitely going to stick to this list for 20-(till death do us apart).
P.S.: The Rules for living written in bold fonts are the original resolutions as mentioned in the book and you’re smart enough to know who has written the ones in Italics.
